The Predicament of Changed Seasons

Unnatural Nature

Dear Younger Me,

There’s something funny about the change in the seasons. Why can we not just stay in the constant of it all? Where the coming and the going lead one right after another into the cacophony of the expected. It’s steady. It’s comfortable. It’s normal.

But is that what we truly seek? Normality? Consistency? Comfortability? Potentially so, but it isn’t very natural. Just take a look outside. It may be raining, or snowing, or gorgeously sunny. It might be the same tomorrow too. More rain or more snow or more sun or more clouds, but it never stays the same forever. So why should you?

Why should we seek to stay the same when the world never has? Why should we seek to be normal when the world is anything but? Younger me, do not be content with staying the same. Do not be content with being “normal.” Look no further than your window for motivation. If you find yourself in and out of the monotony of routine, just look at the weather. Has it stayed the same temperature for even an hour? Maybe so, but the season will change. The question is: will you?

Be like the seasons, younger me. Find symphony during a set season, but know you should change. While it may rain for a week or be cloudy for a month, it never is for an entire year. It never is that constant. It is never that normal. So why should you?

Best,

Older You
